How To Draw Fall Leaves?

I’ll give you two examples of my lettering that makes use of leaves to fill in blank spaces.

Whether you use a single type of leaf or a combination of them, leaves make excellent decorations.

Despite using a rainbow color scheme, I’ve added leaves to this vibrant “Fall” piece to give it a more seasonal feel.

The leaves add to the overall interest and sense of balance in this “It’s the Will, Not the Skill” piece.

The essential actions for each leaf are:

  1. The stem and leaf outline should be drawn first.
  2. After that, add veins as shown. The leaf looks more realistic thanks to the details.
  3. Last but not least, to really make your leaf pop, add colors and tiny, smaller veins.

Dogwood Leaf

It is also known as a simple ovulate leaf, dogwood is a common type of leaf. Its ends are pointed and oval in shape. It works well with a variety of designs.

Create a long stem line first, and then begin the leaf shape about one-third of the way up from the bottom of the stem line.

Create a point at the top above where your original line ended, then curve out and upward. Return to your shape’s beginning by bending downward once more.

Redbud Leaf

This is a simple leaf variation that uses a heart-shaped pattern rather than an oval with a pointed tip.

Similar to the first leaf, the fundamental steps are used. Just remember to curve downward first before continuing your line up to the top when you start to form the leaf shape.

In essence, you are forming a stem that runs through the middle of an upside-down heart-like shape. See more about How To Draw A Compass Rose?

Small Oak Leaf

This leaf is lobate-shaped rather than being simple.

You will draw a line for the stem first, and then five rounded lobes will be drawn around it. The bottom two should be larger and wider than the other three.

Keep in mind that symmetry isn’t always found in nature, so don’t worry about making them perfect.

Large Oak Leaf

This oak leaf is a more elaborate version of what you just discovered. There are seven lobes as opposed to five.

Draw at least one vein that enters each lobe from the central stem to add depth.

Maple Leaf

Drawing this kind of leaf is somewhat similar to drawing the Small Oak, but you should make the ends of each lobe pointed rather than rounded.

For the leaf to have the shape we are familiar with, the bottom lobes should once more be the biggest and broadest.

Ash Leaf

Draw a center stem first, then a ragged leaf shape with a pointy top, as shown.

Short diagonal lines that branch out in opposing directions from the stem.

Finish by adding more leaves, one on each line.

Black Walnut Leaf

This leaf type also has a stem and a leaf at the top, but the edges of these leaves aren’t as sharp.

The next step is to sketch tiny leaf shapes directly touching the stem on both sides.

Final Words

No matter if you want to create a drawing that is slightly less realistic or more accurate, drawing autumn leaves is a fairly simple task. The outline of a fall leaf should be drawn first, and then the details can be added. By doing so, you’ll have a reference structure you can use to map the leaf’s design and check for symmetry.
